Production and elimination of sulfur-containing gases in the rat colon.

چکیده
Highly toxic sulfur-containing gases have been pathogenetically implicated in ulcerative colitis. Utilizing a rat model, we studied the production and elimination of sulfur-containing gases within the unperturbed colon. The major sulfur-containing gases were hydrogen sulfide (H2S), methanethiol, and dimethyl sulfide with cecal accumulation rates of 2.6, 0.096, and 0.046 μl/min, respectively. The dependence of H2S production on dietary components was demonstrated via a sixfold reduction with fasting and a fivefold increase with carrageenan (a nonabsorbable, sulfur compound) feeding. Zinc acetate reduced cecal H2S by fivefold, indicating the importance of H2S binding by divalent cations. During passage from the cecum to the rectum, >90% of the sulfur gases were absorbed or metabolized. An H235S turnover of 97%/min was observed in the isolated cecum. Thus mucosal exposure is >10 times the measured accumulation rate. Cecal mucosal tissue very rapidly metabolized H2S and methanethiol via a nonmethylating reaction.

Theoretical and Experimental Investigation of SO2 Adsorption from Flue Gases in a Fluidized Bed of Copper Oxide
Among the air pollutants, sulfur dioxide has been given special emphasis for posing dangers to the environment. SO2 emissions in the air have harmful effects on human health and the environment. Respiratory diseases and exacerbation of heart diseases are among dangerous symptoms for human health, especially when high concentrations of SO2 are emitted. Therefore, in the present study, a wide var...
متن کاملEffect of source and level of sulfur supplementation on mohair characteristics and growth in male goat kids
In the present study, twenty-five male goat kids (20±2.5 kg BW) were used during an 84- day experimental period to determine the effect of source and level of sulfur supplementation on mohair characteristics and performance. Experimental diets were diets containing 0.18% (as control), 0.24% and 0.34% DM inorganic or organic sulfur. The data were analyzed as a 2 × 2 factorial design. Methionine ...
متن کاملInvestigation on life cycle assessment of lead and zinc production
Lead and zinc production is one of the main predisposing factors of excessive greenhouse gases emissions, air pollution and water consumption. In this paper, the environmental problems of lead and zinc production in Calcimin plant are expressed and life cycle assessment of this plant is assessed. The data regarding the amount of induced global warming and pollution, acidification, and depletion...
متن کاملEffects of 4-(2-Alkylthio-1-benzyl-5-imidazolyl)-Dihydropyridines on the Isolated Rat Colon and Right Atrium Contractility
Objectives In order to provide a pharmacological profile for some newly synthesized dihydropyridines, we investigated their effects on the isolated rat colon segments and the isolated rat atrium contractility. The tested compounds include alkyl ester analogues of nifedipine, in which the ortho-nitrophenyl group at position 4 is replaced by 2-alkylthio-1-benzyl-5-imidazolyl substituent, and nif...
متن کاملMonitoring of SO2 column concentration over Iran using satellite-based observations during 2005-2016
For the first time, sulfur dioxide concentration was monitored between 2005 and 2016 over Iran which is among the countries with a high SO2 emission rate in the world. To that end, SO2 column concentration at Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) from Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) was analyzed. OMI is a sensor onboard the Aura satellite which can measure daily SO2 concentration on the global scale...
